If you’ve had French Onion Soup you know the best part is the caramelized onions. Try this French Onion and Feta Pizza and take pizza night up a notch. Here, you can have that delicious sweet flavor with the heartiness of homemade pizza and tang of homemade feta! Plus, I top it at the end with something special that makes it even better!
Pizza Night
Almost weekly, we have family pizza night at home. We have done this for years and everyone looks forward to it. We always have homemade pizza too, which lets us get quite the variety of pizzas! I have always liked to flex some creative muscles with homemade pizza. Hence, how this delicious French Onion & Feta Pizza came to be. I adore onions in any form. But when you caramelize them, they take on a depth a flavor that can’t be beat. Gone is the crunchy, sometimes spicy raw onion. In it’s place is a soft, sweet onion that still has a slight crunch to it. It makes the perfect addition to this pizza.
Caramelized Onions
So how do you get caramelized onions? It is actually extremely simple but does take time. All you need are fresh onions (I use any kind I have) and a sturdy pan. I do almost all of my cooking in cast iron. Slice the onions up into thin strips. Heat up a tablespoon of butter in the pan. Add the onion slices and turn the burner down to low. Stir the onions occasionally to keep them from burning. They will slowly start to turn translucent as they cook. Keep them going until they are soft and brown. You may think you will have a ton of onions when you are slicing them. But just wait. They will break down and you will be shocked at the small amount you end up with. Once they are completely caramelized, remove from heat and let cool while you prepare the rest of the pizza.

What You Need
This pizza starts with an amazing homemade dough crust. It’s chewy and soft with a great flavor. Nothing bland about this crust. I use my Easiest Dough recipe that you can find here. For a base I like olive oil. My favorite is Jovial olive oil because of its mild flavor and I can trust the company. So many olive oils are fake these days and finding one that you know is true to form is a big deal. I also live on garlic so that is an absolute must for any pizza I make. Freshly chopped is ideal but granulated is still tasty if you’re in a hurry or just don’t have any fresh. Ricotta makes a solid mild yet creamy base. Add chosen toppings ( see list below). Then the delicious caramelized onions. Don’t be skimpy. Get a nice layer on there with no gaps. This is after all, the star of the show ingredient. Now you have a lot of freedom to make this French Onion & Feta pizza your own custom masterpiece. A few ideas include:
- Grilled Chicken
- Mushrooms
- Spinach
- Browned Sausage
- Bell Peppers
- Kale
- Arugula
- Ham
- Artichokes

Choose your toppings and layer on top of the onions. I always finish with crumbled feta (homemade thanks to our milk cow Lucy) and a sprinkle of dried red chili peppers.

Bake It!
I always bake our pizza in an extremely hot oven. It gets it as close as possible to a wood fired pizza experience with out the wood oven. I preheat to the highest temp my oven will go to (550 F). I have a pizza stone in there preheating as well. Once it is at temp, I use a pizza peel to transfer the pizza to the stone. I bake the pizza on the parchment paper as well because the dough I use is very sticky and there is no way it will come off that paper until baked. The pizza takes around 10-12 minutes to bake usually. Depending on your oven, it could be a shorter time or slightly longer. Just keep an eye on it and when the cheese shows some browning, it is good to go.
Enjoy!
Once I cut this pizza up and serve it, I drizzle each piece with some raw honey. Talk about a clincher! This pizza is great on its own but the honey really makes flavors pop. This French Onion & Feta Pizza is sure to be a hit with anyone willing to branch out. Any toppings you choose will go together and anyone who enjoys a creative meal will appreciate this. From the chewy crust to the sweet caramelized onions to the tangy feta cheese on top, this pizza satisfies all the tastebuds. Let me know in the comments if you make this and what toppings you use!
